Székesfehérvár may look like a peaceful modern city today, 

but don’t let that fool you — this was once the VIP backstage of medieval Hungary.

Kings were crowned here, kings were buried here, and kings probably argued over who had the bigger crown here. Stroll through the old town, and you’re basically walking on royal history —just with better coffee shops.

 

In August, Székesfehérvár comes alive with the Royal Days Festival, celebrating Hungary’s first king and the city’s coronation heritage. Travellers can enjoy colourful parades, medieval-style markets, knight shows, live folk music, street performances and family programs throughout the historic city centre.

Visiting during Royal Days feels like stepping into a fun, compact medieval world — with costumes, music, and history all around you. It’s one of the most exciting times to experience Székesfehérvár.

 

 

 

Just a short drive from the city, the enchanting Bory Castle awaits visitors with its dreamlike architecture.

Built almost entirely by the sculptor Jenő Bory himself, this romantic, fairy-tale-like structure features towers, sculptures, and lush gardens that reflect decades of artistic devotion.  He built it as a gift of love for his wife (a painter) and as a monument combining his art and devotion — a “castle of love and art,” filled with his sculptures, mosaics, paintings and creative vision.

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Vértes Mountains, Csókakő Castle offers breathtaking views and a step back into Hungary’s medieval past.

Its restored walls and peaceful natural surroundings make it a favourite destination for hikers and history lovers.

 

 

For nature lovers, Lake Velence is one of the region’s true treasures — and honestly, it’s my favourite place to unwind near Székesfehérvár.

The lake offers everything from calm swimming spots and refreshing water sports to peaceful bird-watching areas surrounded by reeds and gentle hills. It’s the perfect escape when you want a break from city sightseeing.

And while you’re there, don’t miss the classic lakeside treats: grab a fresh lángos or a juicy gyros from one of the beach stands — it’s practically part of the local experience.
